Lines and Colors and Shapes....Oh My!

First grade artists created these abstract paintings using geometric and free-form shapes, primary and secondary colors, and line variety.  The paintings followed a lesson were we read the book Mouse Paint, identified primary colors, and created secondary colors using Model Magic

  1. Oh my gosh these are spectacular GORGEOUS! Did the kids mix the colors or did you provide primaries and secondaries? How many sessions did they take to create? What is your paintbrush washing process (the colors look like they stayed very CLEAN). So many questions...

  2. @ Phyl- I feel so honored because I love the work you do with your students! The students learned color mixing the week before using Model Magic so I eliminated color mixing for this one. I had them mix their colors last year and the secondary colors were so off, maybe I will try it again another year. This lesson took 3 weeks--wk 1: paint geometric and free-form shapes in primaries; wk 2: paint negative space in secondaries; wk 3: use line variety in b&w to add details. I have three large tables in my room. I set up the tables with paints/brushes and the students rotated to each color after I go the ok from them that they they were finished painting with that color. So as a class....red moved to blue, blue to yellow, yellow to red. I used the same process with the secondary colors the next week. I have never tried this before and it was AMAZING! I was so impressed with how these little first graders followed directions as they moved from one table to another. The beauty of this was NO WASHING BRUSHES until all 3 of my first grade classes were done art!

  4. I have enjoyed viewing your students art so very much. What grade level is this? I've had my personal blog for a few years. I've been teaching for three years, but it wasn't until this semester that I started a blog to share with some of the new teachers and to show case student work. They have loved it and so have I.
