Drawing from Observation

Caitlin B.

Fifth grade students sharpened their observing skills and created contour line drawings of their shoe.  We discussed how a contour line follows the outside and inside edges of the shoe.  Students drew in stitching details and also learned how stippling, hatching, and cross-hatching could add value to their drawing.  The students thought it was great to take their shoes off in art....I think they did an awesome job on their drawings!

  1. did you have them do the drawing in pencil first then go over it with black marker? or is it all done with black marker?

  2. I have them do a contour line drawing in pencil, then they trace over the pencil in Sharpie and add pen and ink details.

  3. I just discovered your blog. I usually do contour shoes w/my 5th graders too, but I have them do direct contour w/felt-tip pens, no pencils no erasing, to make it a true contour.

This year, I looked at my 5th graders and decided there was NO WAY I was letting this batch of kids take off their shoes - stink potential was just too great!! So we're doing sign language intials w/our hands.
